Solar-Powered Flour Mill Modernization Project 02FTU/SPFM Kama and Koz Kunar Districts - Nangarhar EU/ACTED 2026-01-01 2026-08-31

Youth for Society Organization (YSO), with support from ACTED’s Funding and Technical Unit (FTU) and funding from the European Union (EU), successfully implemented the “Enhancing MSMEs Productivity through Solar-Powered Flour Mill Modernization in Kama and Koz Kunar Districts, Nangarhar Province” project from 1 January to 30 August 2026. The project aimed to strengthen the productivity and sustainability of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) by modernizing traditional flour mills with solar-powered technology, reducing dependence on diesel fuel, lowering operational costs, and promoting environmentally friendly business practices. Through the project, eight flour mills in Kama and Koz Kunar districts received modernization support and were installed, commissioned, and made operational. The selected businesses also benefited from capacity-building sessions on business planning, marketing and market linkages, procurement and financial management, machinery operation and maintenance, and solar energy systems. The project supported eight MSMEs, including two women-owned businesses, promoting women’s economic participation and strengthening local entrepreneurship. By combining clean-energy technology with business development training, the initiative helped participating enterprises improve their operational capacity and build a stronger foundation for sustainable growth. The project was implemented in coordination with relevant local stakeholders, including the Departments of Industry and Commerce and Economy, through a transparent beneficiary selection and assessment process. YSO appreciates the support of ACTED and the European Union, as well as the cooperation of local authorities, participating entrepreneurs, and community stakeholders. The organization remains committed to promoting sustainable livelihoods, private-sector development, renewable energy, and economic opportunities for vulnerable communities in Afghanistan.
